When Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian empire - the great, great-uncle of current Alpine WEC star, Ferdinand Habsburg - was assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, the French Grand Prix, scheduled for July 4, still went ahead. And, with the race around the roads of Lyon being staged on a Saturday, a party atmosphere prevailed - a sort of last hurrah before darkness would fall over Europe. The undoubted star at the time was French racing legend and airforce pilot George Boillot
